Ski Patrol, Meet St. Charles

Let’s say you catch an edge under Red Chair, pop up a little too fast, and your knee writes a swear word you can’t repeat in front of kids. This winter, the help you want is no longer a mystery search through town—St. Charles is coming up the mountain.

Mt. Bachelor and St. Charles just inked a partnership to staff an on-mountain clinic in the ski patrol building near West Village. It’ll be run by St. Charles Urgent Care providers, open Fridays through Sundays and on holidays, with both teams spending the fall dialing in the exact services and staffing before the lifts spin (typically late November).

Why it matters: on a big, windy volcano with 4,323 acres and 360-degree descents from a 9,065’ peak, minutes count. Having local urgent-care clinicians slope-side means quicker evals, smarter calls, and fewer white-knuckle drives when you’d rather be icing and texting your group chat “I’m fine.”

Translation: care that’s local, immediate, and built for the way we actually ski and ride.

Until then, wax your boards, hydrate, and pray for snow. The mountain’s getting medical backup that speaks Bend.

Franklin Ave: Another Week, Another Cone

The orange barrels are back—Franklin edition. Starting Tuesday, Sept 2, Franklin Avenue between NE 4th and NE 8th shifts to a one-way closure for a safety redo—eastbound closes first for about two months, then it flips and westbound closes for the next phase. One direction will stay open the whole time; detours run via Greenwood, and businesses remain accessible. Expect wider sidewalks, protected bike lanes, calmer crossings—the whole “please don’t play Frogger” package.

How long are we marrying these cones? The city says the lane flip comes late October, and The Bulletin pegs the full reopening by early 2026 with a few paving closures through April—because of course it does. In Bend, seasons go: winter, spring, summer, construction.

Just look at this cutie!

First Bite. Killer Burger.

A small chain just planted a flag next to Bend’s new Costco: Killer Burger opened Aug 18, serving daily 10:30 am –10 pm. It’s the third store for local franchise group Cascade KB, and yes, the peanut-butter–pickle–bacon burger made the trip.

The Peanut Butter Pickle Burger

For the north side retail cluster, this is late-hours gravity: more foot traffic after 8p, more “let’s just stay up here” dinners, and more hiring signs on nearby doors. Consider it the first wave of a bigger build-out around that corridor.

But what about the burgers…

First Take: Killer Burger hits hard—juicy, messy, worth it. Great sear, soft bun, balanced stack, but I’d skip the PB Pickle, unless that’s your thing. Your wallet will notice, but your cravings won’t care.
