Bend’s First Sign Of Fall Isn’t What You Think

Pilot Butte turns yellow before anything else in Bend does. Not the trees. Not some Instagram-famous hillside. A scrubby, kind of scraggly plant most people walk right past without a second look.

It's called rabbitbrush, and if you've hiked the dirt trail up Pilot Butte in late August or September, you've seen it without knowing its name. Low grayish-green shrubs, easy to mistake for sagebrush, until the top of each one bursts into these dense yellow flower clusters. It looks less like a plant blooming and more like the whole hillside got dusted in gold.

Here's the interesting part. Rabbitbrush isn't reacting to cooler weather or shorter days the way the leaves eventually will. It's basically the opposite. It waits out the entire hot, dry summer doing nothing interesting, then blooms right when everything else in the high desert is fried and done for the year. While the wildflowers gave up in June and the grasses went crispy and brown in July, rabbitbrush just sits there. Then late summer hits and it puts on the biggest show of its whole life.

Ranchers have historically hated the stuff, since cattle mostly leave it alone and it spreads into overgrazed land. But bees, wasps, and butterflies love it, especially this time of year when almost nothing else around here is still flowering. If you've noticed more bees buzzing around a random patch of yellow on a hike lately, that's probably rabbitbrush doing the last shift of pollinator season before winter shuts the whole thing down.

So it's not fall yet. Not really. The aspens are still weeks out, and Bend still has plenty of 85+ degree days left in it. But rabbitbrush doesn't wait for a calendar. It's already telling you the season's turning, right there on the side of the trail everybody drives past on their way to the good stuff.

Next time you're up Pilot Butte or out toward the Badlands, look down instead of out at the view for a second. That gold isn't a trick of the light. It's the actual first sign of fall in Bend, and it showed up weeks before anyone was ready to admit it.
