We’re Paige and Mason. The Bend Banner is our way of keeping tabs on this wild, beautiful place we call home. To the mornings that start with coffee and mountain air, the trails that somehow always lead to a brewery, and the kind of small-town stories that remind you why you chose to live here in the first place.

A Bend Breakfast Secret

If you didn’t know it was there, you’d never stop. And if you ever wake up hungry, this is a stop you should hit.

Palmer's Cafe sits quietly beside a motel on Greenwood. Just a low-key storefront that looks like it’s been minding its business since Nixon was in office.

Because it has.

Palmer’s has been family-run for more than 50 years. In Bend terms, that’s ancient history. It has survived timber days, ski town phases, brewery booms, and whatever we are calling this current era. Through all of it, they’ve kept doing the same thing. Breakfast. Done right.

Inside, it feels exactly how you hope it will. Bottomless coffee. Servers who have probably seen three generations of the same family sit in the same corner table. It’s not curated. It’s comfortable.

Now the important part.

The eggs Benedict are delicious. Just well-poached eggs, proper hollandaise, and an English muffin that holds its own. The breakfast plates are huge. Eggs, toast, a mountain of crispy breakfast potatoes.

And the bacon.

Thick cut. Crisp edges. Salty in the way bacon is supposed to be. Some of the best in Bend. You leave full. Like, skip-lunch full.

In a town that changes fast, Palmer’s hasn’t tried to. That might be the best thing about it. It is steady. Dependable. The kind of place where breakfast still feels like breakfast.

7 Years Ago in February

Every year around this time, Bend does the same thing.

We get a few sunny afternoons. The river starts looking optimistic. Someone wears shorts to Newport Market. You hear the phrase “false spring” at least six times before lunch.

And we all collectively decide winter is basically over. But if you’ve lived here long enough, you know better.

Let me take you back to 2019. Yes, 2017 was worse, but that storm wasn’t in late February.

We called it Snowpocalypse. Which sounds dramatic until you remember what it actually looked like. Rooflines disappearing. Plows running nonstop. Side streets turning into bobsled tracks. Cars abandoned mid-slope like little metal tombstones.

In just 24 hours, Bend had logged over 12.5 inches of snow, a new 24-hour record. At higher elevations, it was a different planet. Up at Mt. Bachelor, they received 43 inches in just 3 days.

February in Central Oregon is sneaky. It’s statistically one of our snowiest months. The sun angle starts creeping higher, sure, but the storm track is still very much in play. Cold air hangs around. Systems roll through. And when it lines up, it really lines up.
We’ve seen late February weeks dump a foot in town.

So when someone tells you “winter’s basically done,” just smile politely.
We are not done.

There’s something about late-season snow in Bend. It feels heavier. Quieter. Less chaotic than the holiday rush. The tourists thin out. The locals lean in. You get powder mornings followed by bluebird afternoons that feel almost unfair.
So no, don’t store the snowblower yet. Don’t swap the Blizzaks for summer tires. And definitely don’t jinx us.

Winter isn’t finished with us.

And if history has taught us anything, it’s that Bend’s biggest storms sometimes show up later than you think.
